Even if your divorce is about as straightforward as it gets, it is going to be challenging. In order to make it through the divorce process and into your best post-divorce life, there are some tools that can help you along the way. Taking the time to prepare yourself for the journey ahead can help you move forward with greater peace of mind and increased confidence.

Keep a Legal Pad Handy

A simple legal pad – or any notebook – is a good thing to have around. Your divorce will hinge on negotiating terms related to all of the following (and there are plenty of details to keep track of):

A good habit to get into is writing down any questions you have for your attorney and any tasks your attorney assigns to you as they arise – in addition to keeping track of other divorce-related details (of which there are likely to be many).

Have a Pair of Walking Shoes at the Ready

It is important not to lose sight of your health as your divorce moves forwards, and walking or jogging is a great way to get some healthy movement in while letting off a bit of steam. Divorce is stressful, and exercise is an excellent mechanism for dispelling some of this stress. In fact, when you allow yourself the opportunity for your head to clear, you may find a better path forward toward negotiating divorce terms that both you and your ex are willing to sign off on.

Cut Yourself Some Slack Timewise

Your job, your childcare responsibilities, and your housework do not take a break while you move through the divorce process, and you are likely to find that you are busier than you have ever been, which is stressful in and of itself. Give yourself permission to cut corners here and there by ordering takeout or delivery a night or two a week, by hiring in some help with housekeeping, by reaching out to friends and family for some help with the kids when you need it, or by doing anything else that buys you a bit of precious time.

Have a Plan

Your divorce will evolve over time, and as it does, you will consult with your experienced divorce attorney about next steps. This is your opportunity to ask questions, explore your options, and help ensure that you move forward with purpose, and having a strategy in place can help. This is the time to explore those questions that you have routinely been jotting down, to take a more careful look at how your divorce is proceeding, and to strategize what comes next. Having a plan in place can help make the time that you spend with your divorce attorney that much more valuable. (Is It Time to Call a Texas Divorce Attorney?)
