If you are going through the divorce process, you are going through a lot. Not the least of which is that it takes up an enormous amount of time. You live a busy life with a career, children, and family responsibilities. You are not likely to have a lot of extra time to devote to your divorce, but its outcome will directly affect you and your children’s futures for a long time to come. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help you manage your time throughout the divorce process – while also helping to ensure that you obtain the best resolution possible.

Tip 1: Be Present at Work

Your divorce is bound to permeate nearly every area of your life, but there are things you can do to help minimize the damage. Endeavor to be present when you are on the job, and focus on the work at hand. You may well find that it is a relief to focus on something other than your divorce for chunks of time each day. While your divorce is bound to affect your job, you do not have to let it take over. Talk to your supervisor about what you are going through and about how it might temporarily affect your work, but do your best to keep your career and your divorce separate.

Tip 2: Carve Out Time for Yourself

If you are going through a divorce, you may be tempted to save time by cutting out all the extras – like any time you might take for yourself. This is a mistake. By carving out a bit of you time into your schedule, you will be doing yourself, your case, and your children a favor. The positive effects of tending to your own needs are difficult to overstate, and personal time can come in many forms:

  • Grabbing lunch with friends
  • Spending time with a good book
  • Catching up on a television show
  • Taking a much-needed nap

When you take time for yourself, it allows you to be more present and engaged with others, including your children.

Tip 3: Work Closely with Your Attorney

Divorce is not only an emotional rollercoaster; it is also a lot of hard work. Find an experienced divorce attorney with whom you are comfortable working, and rely upon him or her as a valuable resource. You and your attorney are a team, and with his or her help, you will be able to lighten your load. Your dedicated divorce lawyer will work to protect your best interests. Focus your efforts on getting your attorney the necessary information and documentation, and allow him or her to take it from there.
